Airtricity League First Division Fixtures Unveiled

Airtricity League First Division Fixtures

The Airtricity League First Division fixtures followed hot on the heels of the Airtricity League Premier Division fixtures announcement.

A highly entertaining season is in prospect with some big clubs adding a competitive dimension to proceedings.

Drogheda Utd, Shelbourne, Limerick and UCD will all fancy their chances of getting back to the big time as quickly as possible.

The opening weekend fixtures will play out on Friday 4th and Saturday 5th March with the seasons fixtures scheduled to continue all the way to Halloween and beyond.

Having come down from the Premier Division last season Drogheda and Limerick in particular will want to bounce straight back up. The Drogs open their campaign with a home game against Waterford Utd while Limerick host UCD at Markets Field, the only Saturday fixture.

Shelbourne have spent far too long in this division for a club of their reputation and their latest attempt at escaping opens with a home game at Tolka Park. Cobh Ramblers make the long journey from Cork as they attempt to improve on recent years.

The remaining fixture sees the league’s newest team, Cabinteely, host Athlone Town, another side who will feel they belong in the higher echelons of the league.

The Season Ahead

Limerick look to be best placed to get straight back up with automatic promotion while UCD, who have signed Jason Byrne, will battle it out with the likes of Drogheda for the playoffs.

Shelbourne may have to settle for at least another season in the First Division with the glory days remaining an ever distant memory. Although any side from Shels, Cobh, Athlone, and Waterford could push hard for that last remaining play-off spot.

Cabinteely, sorry to say, look destined to prop up the division again this year but coming within a point of Waterford last time around shoes the potential for growth.

Whatever way it pans out this years Airtricity League First Division fixtures promise plenty of entertainment and perhaps the most exciting competition for years.
