The bottom of the table clash is just as big as the one at the top for the two teams involved.

Both Bray Wanderers and Longford Town have watched the teams around them pull away in recent weeks. Bohemians, Sligo Rovers and Wexford Youths have all begun to find their feet and a five point gap has emerged to the bottom two.

Longford are propping up the table by virtue of goal difference but their recent form offers a little more than The Seagulls’. Bray have lost seven in a row in all competitions and five in a row in the league.

It’s a major disappointment for a side who were tipped by many for a top half finish. The signings of Connor Kenna and Ryan Brennan from Shamrock Rovers and Karl Moore and Robbie Creevy from Bohemians was supposed to be a statement of intent by Mick Cooke.

But Cooke hasn’t even made it to the summer break with his former assistant, Harry Kenny, now in charge. Kenny had a new manager boost with an immediate 1-0 over Pats but that was the last time they experienced any joy. A 4-3 defeat to UCD in the cup having been 3-0 down at half-time exemplifies the problems they face.

Meanwhile Longford Town have begun to look like they may have a fighting chance. They were decimated by injuries early on and they certainly took their toll. They still haven’t won for thirteen league matches but a recent cup win and two fine draws at Galway and Pats mean they are showing signs of improvement.

Cork City hadn’t landed a glove on them recently until a thirty-eighth minute sending off went against them. That means that Tristan Noack-Hoffman will miss this game but the likes of Conor Powell, Mark Rossiter and, importantly, Lee Duffy should be just getting into their stride.

De Town have been friendless in the market up to now and their drifting price may just offer a little opportunity. It certainly seems difficult to have faith in Bray at odds on.
