St Patricks Athletic are starting to purr according to Liam Buckley.

Or so says the RTE headline after last weekend’s 4-0 home win over Wexford Youths. It’s not the first time this season that grandiose claims about The Saints’ performances have emanated from Inchicore.

The last time was followed up by a 0-4 trouncing at home to Dundalk and that quickly brought an end to their early season title talk. The problem with this Pats side is that they are plagued by inconsistency.

Good wins over Bohs, Youths and Rovers have been let down by poor defeats to Galway and Dundalk at home. You could even bunch the rather fortunate win in Donegal in with those losses although three points is what counts at the end of the day.

Their best results have come on their travels with three wins in three away league games. They also saw off Dundalk at Oriel Park in the League Cup midweek but that result should be taken with a liberal pinch of salt. Their short trip to the seaside should see them keep the latest run going and keep them within three points of the league leaders, at worst.

Bray Wanderers have started this season like they have started most of their recent campaigns although this time it has come as a bit of a surprise. Many were tipping Bray to finish in the top half this year but those hopes could be built on the foundations usually associated with sand castles.

The slightest bit of a wave has seen their hopes crumbling around them. Now that they have seceded from the rest of the league and taken up their familiar position at the bottom of the table it could take another couple of weeks before any progress is likely to be made.

Their next four games are against the four best teams in the country with Pats, Rovers, Cork and Dundalk all lining up their sights. If we can get a price like the bookies are offering on Pats on Saturday evening it could be a lucrative couple of weeks for punters, too.

Bray Wanderers v St Patricks Athletic Betting Preview Best Betting Odds

Pats actually opened at odds against but the best you will get now on an away win is 1.89 (8/9) from Marathon Bet. That still represents value for me and is worth taking although you may be better served backing them to score +1.5 team goals at 2.1 (11/10) with Betfair.

Bray Wanderers can be backed at 4.8 (19/5) with Marathon Bet while the draw is best priced at 3.55 (28/11) with the same firm.

The even money for both teams to score from Coral and Betfair doesn’t appeal and neither does the 2.15 (23/20) from Betfair for +2.5 goals. A 0-1 win for Pats isn’t entirely out of the question based on their away performances this season which leaves me backing them on the WDW markets instead of team goals.
