Cork City v Dundalk Betting Preview

The Presidents Cup Final

Location: Turners Cross

Date: 27th February 2016

Time: 14:00

You couldn’t have got a better way to open the season if you had hand picked the sides.

The best two teams in the country for the last two years fighting it out for yet another trophy. It will be a fine spectacle for those inside Turner’s Cross although Cork City must be sick of the sight of Dundalk.

The Rebels have failed to beat The Lillywhites on the last ten occasions and at least two of them were for a trophy. Most recently, in the FAI Cup final from last season, they made a good fist of it but Dundalk’s quality and, tellingly, their fitness came through in the end.

That has been one of the defining qualities of this Dundalk side for the past two seasons and it has helped them stand apart in the league. The rest of the sides are quite literally playing catch up with Stephen Kenny’s team from the get go.

City are at least talking a good game with Greg Bolger saying on the clubs twitter account that he doesn’t think “any other team will have done the preseason we have”. It’s quite a claim when you consider how high Dundalk have raised the bar but believable that City have the constitution to give it another big push.

As far as preseason is concerned the League Of Ireland preseason friendly results make for interesting reading. Cork and Dundalk have played six times with four clean sheets apiece and twenty or more goals for both sides.

The League Of Ireland transfer round up gives an idea of one thing that should help both sides be there or thereabouts again this season, consistency in their squads. Again, they both lost some key talent with Dundalk likely to feel the loss of Richie Towell just as intensely as Liam Miller and the Dennehy brothers leaving Cork City.

They have both made some key additions and if they hit the ground running Dundalk’s signings of McEleney and Benson could have plenty to offer. Eoghan O Connell is an exciting prospect for City and will likely improve a defence that was already tighter than all but Dundalk last season.

Dundalk take the favourites tag here courtesy of the head-to-head record but Paddy Power offer a best price of 2.62 (13/8) and many will find that acceptable. City are best priced at 2.9 (19/10) with bet365, Ladbrokes and William Hill while the draw is available at a high of 3.2 (11/5) with bet365, Paddy Power and Ladbrokes.

Goals might be in the offing if the last eight meetings at Turner’s Cross are anything to go by. All eight saw +2.5 total goals and that pays out at a price of 2.3 (13/10) with William Hill. Season openers are traditionally tight affairs but at that price it seems right to have a go.

Both teams to score has come in seven times in those eight games and is available at 1.95 (19/20) with William Hill.

One thing to keep an eye out for is whether Paddy Barrett starts for Dundalk. If he does he is keenly priced to score first at 33/1 with Paddy Power. The centre half back has an excellent goal scoring record and hits a mean free kick to boot. For a small stake he could make it a decent start to the season for punters.
