Dundalk met Shelbourne at this stage last season on their way to winning the FAI Cup.

They comprehensively saw off the Dubliners with a 5-0 scoreline and you can expect something similar again. Particularly now that Dundalk look to be getting into gear after their 0-7 win at Finn Harps last weekend.

Last year Stephen Kenny made a number of changes to his side with youngsters starting in defence, midfield and attack. That is something else you can expect to see this time with the likes of Paddy Barrett, John Mountney and young Georgie Poynton likely to start.

It shouldn’t affect them too badly although their side may have been stronger but for a spate of injuries of late. Robbie Benson and David McMillan have been getting first team opportunities lately and could perhaps sit this one out.

Shelbourne are in better form this season having already seen off Bohs in the League Cup. They narrowly missed out on making the semi finals eventually losing out to Shamrock Rovers on penalties. But Shels will be up against it here and their good form might just help to focus the minds of The Lillywhites.

They have conceded a solitary goal in their last eight matches over ninety minutes and with the exception of Barrett their defence should remain relatively intact.

The WDW markets for this game are basically untouchable so it’s straight to the handicaps were Dundalk -2 at evens with Coral is worth a look. It may even be worth taking a chance on Dundalk -3 at 3.25 (9/4) with Ladbrokes.

Over 2.5 goals at 1.91 (10/11) with Skybet and Boylesports is also worth considering. It is certainly preferable to backing Dundalk to score +2.5 team goals at a very short 1.62 (8/13) with Ladbrokes.
