What do you do with a problem like Dundalk?

That’s a conundrum that faces League Of Ireland managers and punters alike. Now Stephen Kenny is facing a wee problem of his own. If, that is, wondering which striker deserved their place up front more than the other can be considered a problem.

Kenny changed it around last week and started with both Ciaran Kilduff and David McMillan in a changed system. It clearly worked a treat with neither striker getting amongst the goals for the third time this season but it did open it up for Ronan Finn to score his first ever hattrick. Problem solved.

The punters’ problem is trying to find a way to back Dundalk profitably when the bookies are so keen to make prices prohibitive. It’s a problem I’ve discussed before when Dundalk play at home and the natural inclination is to go straight for a -1 handicap.

Looking deeper into it I discovered that religiously backing Dundalk -1 would see you lose money in the long run but backing them -2 Asian Handicap should see you come out on top. This is particularly true when they play at home to bottom half sides and, importantly, you are getting better than evens for your money.

The first attempt this season was against Finn Harps and my figures suggested a margin of 11.5% for a price of 2.23 (16/13). There is an even better price available against bottom of the table Sligo Rovers but Sligo are better than their current position testifies.

While they are winless this season they held Cork to a 0-0 draw two weeks ago and by all accounts were very unlikely not to take three points from Pats last weekend. You have to bear in mind that Dave Robertson has the guts of an entirely new squad to blend so they were always going to take time to get into gear.

One defeat in their last five with three of those games against top five sides suggests things are slowly coming together. But with the head to head stats showing the Bit O Red winless against Dundalk in seven attempts it looks like the best they can hope for is avoiding a battering.

Dundalk are no better than 1.3 (3/10) with 888Sport to win on their home patch. Sligo Rovers can be backed at a high of 16/1 with Coral and that is higher than it should be. The draw is available at a best 5.8 (24/5) with Marathon Bet.

Both teams to score doesn’t tempt even at a high price of 2.33 (4/3) with 888Sport. Goals backers can get 1.75 (3/4) with 32Red and Unibet and that certainly has a chance.

I am sticking with the Dundalk -2 Asian Handicap bet available at 2.48 (33/25) with 888Sport and that’s a price I expect to fall somewhat by kick off on Friday. Mind that there is stake back insurance should Dundalk win by exactly two goals.
