Airtricity League Premier Division

Location: Ballyboffey

Date: 4th March 2016

Time: 19:45

Finn Harps have one simple aim this season and that’s to stay in the Premier Division.

It’s a tough ask and even their manager, Ollie Horgan, admits that finishing second bottom and in the playoff position would be a success. They have a hard old start with Dundalk and Shamrock Rovers to come in their first three games.

That makes getting something out of their first game against derby rivals Derry City an imperative. While The Candystripes have lost a lot of talent like McEleney and Timlin it would still be something of a surprise where Harps to do the business against their rivals.

They are no strangers to causing a shock having knocked an in form Limerick out of the playoffs despite trailing from the first leg. But the small budget Horgan has to work with leaves him shopping around the castoffs of Premier Division clubs.

The most eye catching signing for Harps was former Manchester United youth Ryan McConnell but he has zero experience at senior level and his ability to step up is still in question. Most other signings are players who struggled to get a starting berth at Premier Division sides last season.

Derry City’s major coup could arguably be signing Kenny Shiels as manager. He certainly has pedigree having won the Scottish League Cup with Kilmarnock in a final victory over Celtic. He hasn’t done a lot since with only short term stints at Morton and a Thai club on his CV but he has experience and knows the game inside out.

He has brought some signings over from Scotland although neither would register with all but the most ardent of Scottish football fans. Rory Patterson returning from that other United of Manchester is the big deal.

If he can recapture the form that saw him hit double figures in his last two seasons at The Brandywell it might just be enough to keep them out of trouble.
