The last time Longford Town met Cork City they were at the wrong end of a 6-0 thrashing.

The Rebels took out in that match and all the signs were that they were hard on the heels of the champions, Dundalk. A win over Dundalk in their next match had the fans dreaming and virtually proclaiming a League Of Ireland title to be going Leeside.

It’s a funny old game and Cork went on to drop points in their next three matches leaving them trailing by four points in the league title race. To be fair to John Caulfield’s men they have now won six league games on the spin and their title challenge looks to be back in good nick.

But it’s always been their away performances that leave their fans squirming in their seats. They have won two in a row on the road which is as much as they’ve managed in the league since June in 2014. At such a short price to win this game people will automatically look to the handicaps but I would urge great caution.

Cork City have covered a handicap in just eight away league matches going back to the start of the 2013 season. That covers fifty-six games although one of them was a 1-4 win for them here midway through last season. But that one off victory doesn’t alleviate the danger of backing Cork on their travels and they may be arriving at Longford bang at the wrong time, too.

De Town won their first game since the season opener last weekend even if it was against lower league opposition in the FAI Cup. Their squad, which was decimated with injuries, is starting to get the all clear again with a raft of players stripping off the bandages and pulling on the shirts.

The likes of Mark Rossiter, Conor Powell and others are getting into gear and their performances and results have stepped up with them. First choice goalkeeper Paul Skinner should also be close to a return and former Hibernian attacker Cody Mulhall has joined and could bring an added dimension to their attacking play.

Longford were stuffy opponents at home last season and with their squad returning to full fitness Cork may not have this all their own way.

Longford Town v Cork City Betting Preview Best Betting Odds

Cork City are incredibly short going into this match at a best priced 1.33 (1/3) with bet365 and Paddy Power. Longford Town can be backed at a high of 10/1 with Marathon Bet who are also best price for the draw at 5.5 (9/2).

Backing Longford Town with a +1 Asian Handicap is priced at 2.6 (8/5) with bet365 and given Cork’s inconsistency on the road it should be considered. It has stake back insurance should Longford lose by the odd goal and any better result sees a winner.

Longoford have scored at least twice in all but one of their last five games so both teams to score can be considered at 2.2 (6/5) with Marathon Bet. The price of 1.71 (5/7) for +2.5 goals is short but likely.
