There’s no doubting the biggest game of this weekend and there’s every chance it could be a cracker.

The FAI and everyone at Shamrock Rovers will be hoping to avoid a repeat of the scenes that blighted the Dublin Derby last weekend. The team will have enough on their plate to worry about with Dundalk’s exemplary away form.

The Lillywhites have won all four league games on the road scoring thirteen goals and conceding just twice. It was the 0-4 win in Inchicore that really stood out after Pats had set title tongues wagging with a 0-2 victory over Rovers just the week before.

That was a real declaration of intent from the champions and having put Pats back in their place they will look to do the same to The Hoops. Stephen Kenny’s Dundalk have a really good head to head record against Rovers having avoided defeat in all but one of the last thirteen meetings.

Dundalk fans will have very fond memories of their last Tallaght sojourn having wrapped up their first successive League Of Ireland titles here last October. That will no doubt have stuck in the throat of the Rovers faithful and staff so revenge could be the dish of the day.

Whether the current side is set up to deliver is up for debate. Despite their excellent 0-4 win over Bohs in the Dublin derby there form has been, at best, sporadic. Before Bohs they lost convincingly in Derry and their wins against Galway, Finn Harps and Wexford were far from convincing.

They do have one thing to be positive about. The 3-0 League Cup win over Athlone Town on Wednesday night saw a return to action for Stephen McPhail and Luke Byrne to first team action for the first time this season.

With Dundalk losing Ciaran Kilduff to injury for some time they are now short of strikers. If anything happens to David McMillan they could find themselves in a spot of bother and their third title tilt could be on the ropes.

For now McMillan is fit and whether McPhail and Byrne make Friday night’s match isn’t yet clear. For Friday’s match the fact that the last three head to heads here have ended in draws makes it an outcome I wouldn’t bet against.

Shamrock Rovers v Dundalk Betting Preview Best Betting Odds

Dundalk are favourites at a best price 2.3 (13/10) with Paddy Power and there could be a smidgeon of value in that. Rovers can be backed at 3.74 (52/19) with Marathon Bet while the draw is best priced at 3.4 (12/5) with bet365.

Both teams have scored in five of the last seven head to heads so there is reason to like the odds against price of 2.1 (11/10) from 888Sport. The price for +2.5 goals of 2.38 (11/8) from Marathon Bet also appeals given the price but in reality backing goals in this game is always risky.

The truth is that the price on Dundalk with Draw No Bet insurance of 1.7 (7/10) that was snapped up yesterday (Tuesday) is where the value was at. It’s gone and the best you will get now is 1.57 (4/7) and that makes this game a no bet. Unless Paddy Barrett starts for Dundalk and then I will have a wee punt on him to score first.
