The Youths were bitten by a sharp dose of reality on their Premier Division debut.

Naivety may have played a part in their defeat to Longford Town after they approached the game well fancied by pundits and punters. Conceding a goal in the first six minutes left them with an uphill battle and perhaps next time they will try and find their feet before going hell for leather.

Shamrock Rovers won their first big battle of the season and it was a big win if not spectacular. Brandon Miele announced himself to the season with an expertly executed free kick in the first half but it took the full ninety minutes before they could wrap up the battle of the Rovers.

Sligo reportedly dominated proceedings despite being reduced to ten men and Rovers needed them to be reduced to nine players to ease the pressure. Regardless, the points tally is three and with a clean sheet to boot Pat Fenlon will have considered it a good trip out West.

The first home game of the season will give us a clearer insight into Rovers’ potential for the season ahead. They will have to reckon without their captain, Stephen McPhail, who looks to be a week short of being ready.

Wexford Youths will need to find a way of curtailing their attacking instincts and shoring up the back line if they have any chance of claiming something from this game.

No surprise that Rovers are strong favourites at a price of 1.32 (8/25) with Marathon Bet. A shock away win would pay out at 11/1 with bet365, Paddy Power and Coral while the draw is best priced at 5.6 (23/5) with Marathon Bet.

I certainly wouldn’t be rushing out to back goals in this game even though both teams to score is high at 2.5 (6/4) with bet365. Three or more goals pays 1.8 (4/5) with bet365, Skybet and Ladbrokes but I would be more inclined to take the even money for unders from Paddy Power and Coral.

Some people will see potential in the price of 1.85 (17/20) for Shamrock Rovers -1 goal available with Coral and Ladbrokes. I need a bit more convincing, personally, before I start backing a Fenlon side on the handicaps.
