The battle of the Rovers should be one of the most eagerly anticipated matches of the League Of Ireland opening weekend.

When it comes to Shamrock Rovers we know what we are getting from Pat Fenlon’s side. When it comes to Sligo Rovers we know that we don’t really know what to expect.

It’s a brave new world at the Showgrounds with Dave Robertson brought in from Peterborough to gel together a whole new team of youngsters. No fewer than twelve new players will be wearing the Bit O Red this season .

Whether they will pull themselves together quickly enough to make an impact remains to be seen. It’s hard to garner much from their pre-season which saw wins over Derry City and Athlone Town.

The Hoops had a great pre-season taking part in an international tournament in India and playing in front of crowds in the tens of thousands. They acquitted themselves very well against calibre sides like Argentina U23s.

The warm weather training and group bonding could go a long way to seeing Shamrock Rovers push on towards a title challenge this season. Sligo should be aiming for a European place but whether they are up to that challenge is anyone’s guess.

Sligo Rovers v Shamrock Rovers Betting Preview Betting Odds

Shamrock Rovers are justifiably favourites but the best price of 2.3 (13/10) from Paddy Power is a shade to short to consider. Sligo Rovers are available at 3.4 (12/5) with Coral while the draw can be backed at 3.35 (47/20) with Marathon Bet.

Both teams to score is hard to gauge but a price of 2.05 (21/20) from Coral is very tempting. As is +2.5 goals at 2.35 (27/20) also with Coral. Probably best to wait to see what Sligo have to offer before taking the plunge.
