A couple of weeks ago Pats where talking about challenging for the title.

A 0-4 defeat to Dundalk and two games where they were fortunate to pick up four points later and they may have cause to reassess. At least Christy Fagan has continued to bang in goals although he was absent from the scoresheet in Monday’s (fortunate) win at Finn Harps.

Their home form is worrying with just four points picked up in their first four games. But for a 3-0 win over Bohemians they have conceded in every game with Galway bagging three and Dundalk bagging four in Inchicore.

Wexford Youths can certainly capitalise on those defensive weaknesses as their form testifies. The Youths have found their feet exhibited by their excellent performances against Dundalk, Derry City and most recently Cork City at Turners Cross.

You could argue that Wexford Youths look even stronger than Pats at this stage although the league table belies that judgement. There is definitely an argument for backing Youths with a plus handicap and that’s an option that many will and perhaps should be taking.

But if there is a game in the League Of Ireland this weekend that looks set up for goals it is this one. Both teams to score looks to have a really good chance and at odds against it’s an opportunity I don’t want to miss.

Pats are very short favourites (too short in my opinion) at a best 1.5 (1/2) with Boylesports, Coral and Betfair. Youths can be backed at a high of 7.5 (13/2) with bet365 and Paddy Power with the draw coming in at 4.3 (33/10) with Marathon Bet.

Paddy Power are offering 2.1 (11/10) on both teams to score in this match and that’s a price that is sure to fall as the game approaches. The price for +2.5 goals is much shorter and less appealing at 1.91 (10/11) with Paddy Power.

That would suggest that Pats are more likely to win this game by a 3-0 scoreline than a 2-1 scoreline and I just can’t see that happening. If you’re looking for a long shot that has a hint of a sniff you could back Youths to win and both teams to score at 13/1 with Paddy Power but don’t go mad if it doesn’t come in.
