Dundalk losing to Cork City in the Presidents Cup may well have been little more than a kick up the backside.

It possibly (probably) served as inspiration for the champions to up their game as they headed into the league games proper. Bray Wanders and Finn Harps have both suffered at the hands of a determined Dundalk with six goals scored and just one conceded.

They took just five minutes to make the breakthrough in Bray and at home to a sitting in Finn Harps took sixteen but created more than one chance before then. Against Harps they rested Stephen O’Donnell, Brian Gartland and John Mountney but still had more than enough in hand.

Despite this Stephen Kenny came out and said “we’ll have to do better” after the Harps game. It goes to show the exacting standards being set at Dundalk when a near perfect start is no longer good enough.

To be fair to The Lillywhites manager he was referring to the toll of having to play three games in seven days this week. This schedule can be harsh on even the best resourced sides with strength in depth so you can imagine the effect it will have on Wexford Youths.

After a hard game away to Shamrock Rovers and before a tough away trip to Bohemians they need to try and repel Dundalk. With two defeats from two games and two hard games in front of them the Youths could find themselves rock bottom with no points after four.

None of this is likely to stop them from giving it a right good go. They gave Rovers and Longford plenty to think about although they ended up with nothing to show for it. They will probably do their utmost in an attacking sense to make life problematic for Dundalk but ultimately that could be their undoing.

Dundalk are incredibly short at a best 1.33 (1/3) with Coral. Wexford Youths are as high as 11/1 with Betvictor and the draw is 5/1 with bet365.

Both teams to score is available at 2.25 (5/4) with bet365 while +2.5 total goals can be backed at 1.72 (18/25) with Marathon Bet.

All these prices are restrictive so instead I am going to stick with my guilty pleasure and back Paddy Barrett to score first (check team news) at 25/1 with Paddy Power.

It’s unusual for a centre half to score first in two games running but this guy could end up being even more prolific than Brian Gartland, given a chance. I have no doubts that the chance to back him at 25/1 will not last forever.
