Wexford Youths v Longford Town Betting Preview

Airtricity League Premier Division

Location: Ferrycarrig Park

Date: 4th March 2016

Wexford Youths took the First Division by storm last season but this is a big step up.

If they can score at the rate they did last season they are in with a great chance of ruffling some feathers this year. Almost 50% of their sixty-three goals came from Danny Furlong who set a league record of thirty goals in just twenty-seven starts.

That was a goal every eighty-two minutes and while he is unlikely to hit the same heights at a higher level that kind of strike rate didn’t happen by chance. But if Youths are to make good use of his goals they will need to tighten up at the back.

They conceded in more than two-thirds of their games last season which would be great at Premier Division level. But fitter, sharper, wiser sides are likely to expose their weaknesses much quicker this time around.

In Longford Town they have a club they can aspire to emulate. De Town won the First Division at a canter in 2014 and such was their strength they finished last season in the top half of the Premier Division.

Second season syndrome must be a worry for Tony Cousins particularly as they have lost a few key players from last year. They have brought more than a handful in to replace them and they are confident the freshening up will be enough to the job.

Heading down to Wexford on Friday night, though, they have a long list of injuries so it might be another game or two before they pick up their first points of the campaign.

Wexford Youths v Longford Town Betting Preview Betting Odds

Youths are favourites and shortening on the back of Longford’s injury list at a best 2.56 with Marathon Bet. Longford are available at 2/1 with bet365 and Coral while the draw is best priced at 3.3 (23/10) with Marathon Bet.

Were it not for a weakened Longford side I would be all over both teams to score here but it still has a chance at 1.92 (23/25) with 888Sport. As does +2.5 goals at 2.15 (23/20) with Coral.

I prefer to stick with the WDW and in particular back Wexford but with Draw No Bet insurance. That sees the stake returned if the game ends a draw and at a price of 1.8 (4/5) with Marathon Bet it offers some value.
