The Rebels retreated from The Brandywell with a familiar stinging sensation.

Having looked so good at home it was the same old story on the road for Cork City. The defeat on Friday means City have won just two of their last six league games away from home. Last season they started with two wins from six and that’s simply not good enough.

Beating Longford on Monday is a must now with a trip to Dundalk on the horizon. Even with a win on Monday by the time Saturday morning comes they could already be six points behind the champions.

There was a sense of deja vu for Greg Bolger on Friday, too, as he picked up what is at least the twelfth red card of his career. You know what you’re getting with him, a tenacious ball winning midfielder who occasionally steps over the mark.

At least John Caulfield’s calculated gamble may have gotten lucky this time. With the Longford game taking up the suspension he will be available for Dundalk but if Cork City are to fulfill their early season promise they will need their best players to remain available.

Longford Town will be missing Conor Powell themselves after he got his marching orders at home to St Pats. City will at least be able to call on Colin Healy to replace Bolger but De Town will miss the influence of Powell who is one of their experienced defenders.

His sending off, no doubt, will have cost his side the points against Pats but a trip to The Cross will always be a more difficult encounter. Taking anything back up the road on Monday will be seen as a bonus. We should probably expect a rear guard action from Longford on Monday as they bid to keep The Rebels at bay.

Cork City v Longford Town Betting Preview Best Betting Odds

City’s home form justifies their strong favourites tag at a best 1.35 (7/20) with Marathon Bet. You can back Longford at a high of 10/1 with Betvictor while the draw is available at 5.5 (9/2) with Marathon Bet.

I made the mistake of backing Cork to Win To Nil on the road but at home it is a bet that could be profitable at even money with Paddy Power. It is as preferable as backing City to win with a -1 handicap at the same price with the same firm.

On this occasion I am electing to back UNDER 2.5 goals at 2.09 (12/11) with Marathon Bet. Overs backers can get 1.83 (5/6) also with Marathon Bet.
